General Information:
In the framework of the project "Understanding EU Policy for Equality" (UEUPE) Jean Monnet Chair contributes teaching/learning process for a better understanding of the European Union both as a legal order, as well as the actor helping countries in transition invest in their future.
Jean Monnet Chair pays special attention to the benefits of being an EU Associate Member, with particular focus on the human rights dimension of EU-Georgia cooperation.
Overall Objective of the project:
The overall objective of the UEUPE project is to contribute to increasing the knowledge of Georgia’s youth and academia regarding the European standards on equality, tolerance, and accommodation of diversities focusing on how to measure freedom of expression; how to deal with fake sources of information – understanding benefits of being associate member of EU in order to avoid fake information about EU values
Specific objectives of the Project:
Upgrading curricula of BA, MA, and Ph.D. programs at the TSU through incorporating new/modified courses/topics related to EU Integration and equality policy.
Promoting research and debate on the topic of the European standards on equality and multiculturalism;
Creating a space for dialogue between youth, academic community, and policymakers in the context of EU-Georgia relations discourse;
Increasing resilience to information manipulation, through increased awareness of relevant professional groups (media professionals/journalists) on equality (including hate speech-related issues) and multiculturalism.
Activities held during the project:
- The new course: “Human Rights and Diversity, Combating Discrimination and Hate Speech”
- Three updated syllabi on “Ethnic, Religious, and Linguistic Minority Standards under International, Universal, and Regional Law” (MA); “Religion and International Law” (BA) and “Role of ECRI in the protection of vulnerable groups” (MA)
- Doctoral Seminar on the European standards for equality and combating hate speech
- Roundtable for academia colleagues from TSU and other HEIs.
- Public lectures/talks on EU Integration, equality and non-discrimination issues
In line with the human rights milestones, the activities offered by the proposed Jean Monnet Chair on “Understanding EU Policy for Equality” (UEUPE) seek to contribute to improving the knowledge about the EU, and more importantly, offer constructive academic discussion on European values and the European Union Law particularities focused on equality, anti-discrimination, inclusion and multiculturalism standards of international Law aimed at combating xenophobia and hate speech, with due regard to relevant EU law and standards and their relative influence on Georgia’s legislation and practice.
