Lectureship of Basque language and culture

The Lectureship of Basque Language and Culture is a joint venture of Ivane Javakhishvil Tbilisi State University (TSU) and the Etxepare Basque Institute – Institute for the International Promotion of Basque Language and Culture. The lectureship exists to promote the Basque language and culture in Georgia, as well as strengthen the connections between the two countries.

In 2020, Ivane Javakhishvil Tbilisi State University (TSU) and the Etxepare Basque Institute signed a cooperation agreement to open a Basque Lectureship at TSU. The Lectureship wishes to provide TSU’s employees and students, as well as the general public, with the opportunity of deepening their knowledge regarding Basque Language and Culture.

In September 2021, the lectureship started to offer courses of Basque language and culture at the Faculty of Humanities of Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University and to develop, promote and disseminate other university activities corresponding to those subjects, such as seminars, conferences, forums, research seminars, etc.

One of the main responsibilities of the Basque Lectureships is to organize courses on Basque Language and Culture (for details, please see Courses).

Each academic year, the Lectureship also organizes cultural activities to promote the Basque language, literature, and culture sponsored by the Etxepare Basque Institute, such as symposia, talks, film projections, etc. These are open to the general public and to be developed together with the Etxepare Basque Institute, as well as with other pertinent local entities.

Finally, the Basque Lectureship wishes to foster opportunities for students, researchers, and instructors registered in the Lectureship to do exchange programs and study abroad. We currently offer support to the program of pedagogic training of instructors, researchers, and students learning Basque language at Ivane Javakhisvili Tbilisi State University by granting annually up to 2 scholarships in the Basque Country, for a two-week intensive Basque language course, accommodation, and boarding in Zornotzako Barnetegia in the period from July to September.
