TSU Professors Participate in UNESCO Intergovernmental Bioethics Committee Meeting

The academic staff of the TSU Faculty of Medicine, Associate Professor Nato Pitskhelauri and Professor Nino Chikhladze participated in the 13th session of the Intergovernmental Bioethics Committee, the 30th regular session of the International Bioethics Committee and the 13th regular session of the World Conference on the Ethics of Scientific Knowledge and Technology held at the UNESCO headquarters (Paris, France) on September 18-19.

 

From Georgia until the end of 2027, Associate Professor Nato Pitskhelauri is nominated to the International Bioethics Committee (IBC), and Professor Nino Chikhladze to the World Commission on the Ethics of Scientific Knowledge and Technology (COMEST).

 

This year, the joint working session of the Committees coincided with the 25th anniversary of the World Committee on the Ethics of Scientific Knowledge and Technology and the 30th anniversary of the International Bioethics Committee. The meeting began with a summary of the results achieved over the past three decades, highlighting the importance of UNESCO’s mandate in the field of scientific ethics against the background of revolutionary technological progress, including the achievements of generative artificial intelligence and neurotechnology.

 

Ethical aspects of science and technology management, challenges of global health, science and society in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic were the main topics of the two-day panel discussions. During the sessions, UNESCO’s advisory bodies summarized their work on the topical issues of climate engineering ethics, science-society relations, principles of solidarity and cooperation, and lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic. The work of the sessions was guided by a focus on ensuring a balance of shared values ​​and progress in the development and implementation of UNESCO’s future actions in response to ethical challenges.
