Over 30 speakers from 10 countries and four continents of the world participated in an international conference organized by the Institute of Classical, Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies of Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University (TSU) on February 24-26.
Rector of TSU, George Sharvashidze, Deputy Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sport, Nunu Mitskevich, Director of National Center for Educational Quality Enhancement, Tamar Makharashvili, Director of TSU Language Center, Rusudan Dolidze, Director of the Institute of Classical, Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies, Tinatin Dolidze, Academician, TSU Professor Emeritus, Rismag Gordeziani made welcome speeches at the conference.
The international conference “Teaching Classical Languages in the 21st Century - Vitae Discimus” was dedicated to the 200th Anniversary of Independence of Greece. The topics of the conference included the following: Classical Languages in General and Higher Education Curricula, Handbooks, Assessment, Teaching and Learning Methods, National Standards of Classical Languages, Use of Information Technologies, Social Media and other modern approaches, Impact of the Pandemic, etc.
Among the keynote speakers there were Christian Laes and Mary Pendergraft, Presidents of Euroclassica and American Classical League, respectively; John Taylor, one of the authors of famous British textbooks on classical languages; Jason Pedicone, President of Paideia Institute aimed at popularization of classical languages and civilization.
The conference will promote the internationalization of Greek and Roman philology and humanities in Georgia, raising awareness about the Georgian school of Greek and Roman philology, improved communication and collaboration among various Georgian universities, as well as familiarization with and sharing international experience in teaching classical languages.
