On August 25, 1918, the first-ever gymnastic sport society “Shevardeni” was created in Georgia    upon Professor Giorgi Nikoladze’s initiative. The society united the sections of athletics, weight-lifting, fencing, tennis and shooting. University students, as well as pupils from various gymnasiums of Tbilisi were involved in the sections.

The section of athleticism of Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University was established in the 1960s by Konstantine Zautashvili.

In 1980, a club of athleticism “Amirani” was created, which has been part of the TSU Department of Culture and Sport since 2007. During its entire history, the club has won 1st places at various international tournaments. During the Budapest World Championship in 1993, it won 1 gold and 1 silver medals; in 1994-1995 – 10 gold and 2 silver medals; in 1997-2011 – 36 gold and 1 silver medals during the world championships held in the United States.   

On February 23, 2013, Zurab Chavchanidze won the bench press championship under 125kg in the city of Bordentown, New Jersey, USA.

On December 11-16, 2013, the World Championship was held in the city of Tampere, Finland, where TSU team participated on behalf of Georgia. The team members won 11 gold, 2 silver, 1 bronze medals and set 24 world records.

Throughout 2013, the TSU team won about 100 medals, including 65 gold medals.

An Open European Championship in Powerlifting, Benchpress and Deadlift was held at the conference hall of Tbilisi State University under the aegis of Global Powerlifting Alliance on April 23, 24, 25 and 26, 2015. 300 athletes from 25 countries participated in the competition. TSU team won a total of 22 gold medals.

During the 2016 World Cup in Powerlifting, TSU team won the 1st place with 9 gold medals.

Zurab Chavchanadze is the President of the Club.

Any TSU student with relevant physical training can join the Club.
