Jaba Samushia, Rector of Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University, and Tamta Demurishvili, Director of the Center for Vocational Training and Retraining of Convicts of the Ministry of Justice of Georgia, signed a memorandum of cooperation. The memorandum aims to integrate convicts and former prisoners into society, rehabilitate, resocialize and develop them appropriately, raise awareness of the importance of education and employment, and thus prevent crime in the country by jointly implementing vocational training and retraining programs. Kakhaber Cheishvili, Head of the TSU Vocational Education Center; Giorgi Grigolashvili, Head of the TSU Student Service and Career Development Center; and invited guests attended the event.
According to the memorandum, the parties will implement joint measures, including meetings, training sessions, employment forums, rehabilitation activities, and vocational/retraining programs to prepare for and promote employment.
The memorandum also envisions cooperation that includes the exchange of information, the provision of recommendations if necessary, and the implementation of joint programs and services within the scope of possibilities.
During the event, the TSU Rector expressed his readiness to deliver public lectures on topics related to the history of Georgia that are of interest to the convicts.
Vocational education programs have been implemented at TSU since 2007. Since 2019, the administration of vocational programs has been overseen by the TSU Vocational Education Center. All vocational programs operating at TSU are fully funded by the state.
At present, approximately 400 students are pursuing their studies in Tbilisi and Kutaisi. A total of eight professional programs are available, including accounting, preschool education, customs, event organization, office work, financial services, library work, and freight logistics.
