Jaba Samushia Signs Memorandum of Cooperation with the Siracusa Institute

 

Th Rector of Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University (TSU) Jaba Samushia met with the representatives of the Siracusa International Institute for Criminal Justice and Human Rights (Siracusa Institute).

As part of the meeting, a Memorandum of Cooperation was signed between the Institute of Comparative and Transnational Criminal Law at TSU’s Faculty of Law and the Siracusa Institute, which is aimed at the implementation of cultural, educational, training, research and academic activities between the institutions.

Rector Jaba Samushia informed the representatives of the Siracusa Institute about the role of TSU and the Faculty of Law in the establishment of the legal state and confirmed his readiness for future cooperation. “It is important for us to cooperate with the Siracusa Institute and to exchange experiences, because your experience, like ours, is great and interesting in the field of law,” said Jaba Samushia.

The cooperation between the Institute of Comparative and Transnational Criminal Law at TSU’s Faculty of Law and the Siracusa Institute will significantly contribute to the development of criminal law research in Georgia, as well as to the holding of joint events - symposia, conferences.

In the coming months, the Siracusa Institute will present its own project The Regional Atrocity Crimes Training Platform (REACT), which aims to address regional gaps in the international community’s ability to provide comprehensive, sustained technical assistance and capacity-building for the investigation and prosecution of the most serious international crimes. The parties will also focus on opportunities for future cooperation, including in the areas of research, education and academic activities.

The meeting was attended by the Vice Rector of TSU Erekle Astakhishvili, the President of the Siracusa Institute Jean-François Thony, the Director General of the Siracusa Institute Filippo Musca, the Dean of the TSU Faculty of Law, Tamar Zarandia and representatives of the faculty.

The Siracusa International Institute for Criminal Justice and Human Rights has a long history and great experience. Established in 1972 in Siracusa, Italy, the Institute is dedicated to education, training and research in the fields of international and comparative criminal justice and human rights.
