Jaba Samushia Meets with Azerbaijani Delegation

Rector of Tbilisi State University, Jaba Samushia met with representatives of the State Committee on Religious Associations of the Republic of Azerbaijan (SCRA) and the Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan to Georgia.

The sides discussed the development of educational relations between the two countries, implementation of joint scientific and research projects and issues of future cooperation.

“Representatives of all the nationalities that lived in Georgia a century ago took part in the foundation of Tbilisi State University. We have had very close and friendly relations with the Azerbaijani nation for centuries. The visits that took place during my term of office give me hope that these relations will be further deepened. The Minister of Education of Azerbaijan, the rectors of leading universities have visited TSU, and with your visit we are further expanding this very friendly circle,” Rector Samushia noted.

During the meeting, the Rector emphasized the issues of religious tolerance and unity of the Caucasus. “Religious tolerance is very important; it was the visiting card of our country and Tbilisi. Even today, there are hundreds of mosques in Georgia, namely in the regions where our ethnic Azerbaijani citizens live, and there are also Georgian churches in the territory of Saingilo, where Georgians live. This is a sign that our relations should be strengthened, and we should think about a united Caucasus. The united Caucasus is the greatest force in world politics. We should be together and create a great culture together,” Jaba Samushia added.

Mubariz Gurbanli, Chairman of the State Committee on Religious Associations of the Republic of Azerbaijan (SCRA), focused on the cooperation between TSU and Azerbaijani higher educational institutions.  “Tbilisi State University closely cooperates with Baku State University, and I am sure that the joint projects related to the history of the Caucasus will be very important for the future of the region. The friendly relationship between us is the greatest value and I hope that this relationship will continue in the future,” said Mubariz Gurbanli.

Representatives of the Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan to Georgia, the TSU Department of Foreign Relations, the Caucasus Muslims’ Board, Georgian Orthodox Christian Religious Community of St. Giorgi Church, Georgian Orthodox Christian Religious Community of St. Nino Church took part the meeting.
