TSU Student Choir Wins Grand Prix of International Choir Festival

 

The Student Choir of Tbilisi State University (TSU) became the winner of the Grand Prix of the 19th International Choir Festival Mundus Cantat Sopot. The TSU Choir under the direction of Lasha Mirotadze participated in the Mundus Cantat 2023 festival on behalf of Georgia. Poland was the host of the competition.

Teams from 11 countries participated in the competition, including the United States, Lithuania, the Czech Republic, Israel, Poland and others.

The Mundus Cantat 2023 competition was held in two rounds, and along with Georgia, teams from the United States, the Czech Republic and Poland advanced to the final round. At the international festival, teams competed in the following categories: spirituals, folk, gospel and jazz. Diplomas were awarded to the category winners. Each competing team had to perform two compositions of their choice in the final Grand Prix stage.  

The jury of the competition was composed of leading European specialists. Musical groups from different countries of the world can participate in the international festival. The festival includes both a competition and meetings of participants with leading specialists in the field.

As part of the festival, the TSU Student Choir participated in a seminar on African-American music held by Professor Cliff Ganus of Harding University. The TSU choir also participated in a session on “Georgian Modern Choral Music” held by Professor Liana Chonishvili of Vano Sarajishvili Tbilisi State Conservatoire.
