Cooperation between TSU and Friedrich Schiller University Jena

As part of the Georgian-German university cooperation, Tbilisi State University and Friedrich Schiller University Jena (Germany) jointly developed the project proposal “Preserving Tradition - Securing the Future: Sustainable Development of the German-Georgian Science Network Tbilisi/Jena (DGW)”. With this project, research cooperation between the universities has entered a new stage.

The project is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) as part of the program “Research and Innovation Cooperation with the Eastern Partnership and Central Asian Countries” and aims to establish sustainable German-Georgian partnerships.

During the preparatory phase of the project, a delegation from the University of Jena visited TSU and held a working meeting with Georgian colleagues. The preparatory activities will lay the foundation for the submission of a full proposal in January 2026, which will facilitate the acquisition of additional funding for the full implementation of the project.

Erekle Astakhishvili, the Deputy Rector of Tbilisi State University, opened the event. The meeting was attended by researchers involved in the initiative, as well as representatives of the central administration of the universities, and heads of institutes and programs at the faculties.

“This is a truly unique case. Our cooperation with the University of Jena dates back more than half a century. Our German colleagues are offering us a new form of cooperation. I hope that following today’s discussions, our relationship will evolve in novel directions,” stated Erekle Astakhishvili, the Deputy Rector of Tbilisi State University.

Prof. Dr. Diana Forker of the University of Jena spoke about the significance of the German-Georgian Science Network Tbilisi / Jena (DGW). According to her, the project aims to foster enhanced collaboration between the University of Jena and its Georgian partner universities in the domains of science and education.

During the visit of the delegation from the Friedrich Schiller University Jena, Prof. Dr. Edward Schramm of the University of Jena was awarded an honorary doctorate from Tbilisi State University. The diploma was formally presented by Deputy Rector Nino Gvenetadze.

The TSU Academic Council awarded Prof. Dr. Edward Schramm the title of Honorary Doctor of the University in recognition of his active and fruitful cooperation with Tbilisi State University, his contribution to the scientific and educational activities of the university’s students, academic and scientific staff, and the internationalization of the university.
