Leonardo Cervera Navas, the Secretary-General of the European Data Protection Supervisor, visited Tbilisi State University (TSU) one day before the new Law on Personal Data Protection was enacted. He delivered a public lecture to TSU students, professors and interested individuals. The lecture covered the processes leading up to the establishment of the European Union, as well as the individuals who made significant contributions to the European unification and the formation and legalization of democratic values.

The Head of the Personal Data Protection Service, TSU Associate Professor Lela Janashvili attended the public lecture. “The topic of the lecture is significant for us, as we strive for European integration, and it is especially important for our legal space. The new Law on Personal Data Protection will come into force tomorrow, and a number of events are being held to mark this important date. The International Conference of Central and Eastern European Data Protection Authorities began today and will continue for two days. The meeting held at TSU aims to bring Georgia closer to the European Union,” Lela Janashvili noted.

“The Faculty of Law at Tbilisi State University and the Personal Data Protection Service have a strong cooperation with each other. As part of this cooperation, Leonardo Cervera Navas, the Secretary-General of the European Data Protection Supervisor, delivered a public lecture at TSU on the history of the European Union’s establishment. The lecture aroused a lot of interest among Georgian students and the audience. Organizing such meetings and sharing information about European personal data protection is crucial for our students,” Tamar Zarandia, Dean of the TSU Faculty of Law, said.

The new law “On Personal Data Protection” will come into effect on March 1. This law establishes modern data protection standards in Georgia, involving certain commitments, which the country committed to through the Association Agreement with the European Union.
