Bulgarian Guests at TSU

 

Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University (TSU) hosted the representatives of Sofia University St. Kliment Ohridski, namely Professor Mira Markova, Dean of the Faculty of History, ethnologist, and Associate Professor Ilia Iliev, Head of the Department of Ethnology, ethnologist.

The representatives of Sofia University met with Jaba Samushia, Rector of TSU, to discuss the history of Georgian-Bulgarian relations and future perspectives. Rector Samushia stressed the importance of Bachkovo Monastery for Georgian culture, suggested the possibility of historical documents of interest to Georgia in Bulgarian archives and libraries, and emphasized the need for research in this direction. Professor Mira Markova spoke about the prospects and concrete plans for future cooperation with the Institute of Ethnology and Anthropology. It was noted that there are already plans to carry out joint field studies for the purpose of studying the traditional existence of Mtianeti and parallel analysis of Georgian-Bulgarian materials, to organize a summer school for students, as well as joint publications. She expressed the hope that the cooperation between TSU and Sofia University will continue to deepen.

Sofia University St. Kliment Ohridski is a partner university of TSU. It is the first higher education institution in Bulgaria, which was founded at the end of the 19th century and gradually developed into an important scientific center of the Balkans. Today it is the largest and most prestigious university in the country with 16 faculties.

The Bulgarian guests met with Georgian students and professors, informed them about the study and research opportunities at Sofia University and expressed their interest in deepening further cooperation. Assoc. Prof. Ilia Iliev presented a report “Orpheus in Colchis: Classical Antiquity and European Identity,” which was followed by an interesting discussion.
