TSU Rector Elected as Member of EUA Council

George Sharvashidze, Rector of Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University and Chairman of the Permanent Conference of Rectors of Georgia, has been elected as member of the European University Association (EUA) Council. The EUA Council membership will grant Georgia voting rights in EUA’s decision making. Georgia is the second non-EU member state, following Serbia, to become a member of the EUA Council.

During the meeting with EUA Secretary General Amanda Crowfoot and her Deputy, Monika Steinel, Rector George Sharvashidze discussed recent tragic developments in Ukraine and touched upon concrete steps to support Ukrainian colleagues and students. The EUA confirmed that much is being done to mitigate the harm caused to Ukrainian colleagues. The issues of EUA’s future policy towards Russian universities were also discussed at the meeting.

George Sharvashidze also focused on the autonomy of Georgian universities and their participation in EUA projects.

Tea Gergedava, Head of the TSU Foreign Relations Department, and Irma Grdzelidze, Head of the TSU Quality Assurance Service, also attended the meeting.

The Permanent Conference of Rectors of Georgia has joined the European University Association (EUA) as collective full member. The EUA represents more than 850 universities and national rectors’ conferences in 48 European countries. The Permanent Conference of Rectors of Georgia was founded in 2019 and it unites 35 higher educational institutions.
