TSU Professor Translates Khaled Khalifa’s Novel

Professor Darejan Gardavadze of the TSU Faculty of Humanities has translated a new novel “Death Is Hard Work” by Khaled Khalifa, a Syrian novelist, screenwriter and poet. Georgian readers will have an opportunity to read the novel in the near future.

The novel on which Professor Gardavadze worked during a year and whose author, Khaled Khalifa won the National Book Awards 2019 for Translated Literature is from the greatest chronicler of Syria’s ongoing civil war and it shares the story of a family.

Besides Khaled Khalifa’s novel, Darejan Gardavadze has translated a number of important and interesting books, among others “Men in the Sun” and “Return to Haifa” by Ghassan Kanafani, “The Bleeding of the Stone” and “Gold Dust” by Ibrahim al-Koni, “B as in Beirut” by Iman Humaydan Younes. Professor Gardavadze will offer readers Georgian translation of one more interesting novel by Iman Humaydan Younes within a year.

“It is important for my students to work on the texts; therefore, they should have academic translations through which modern Arabic literary process should ultimately reach the students,” Professor Gardavadze noted.

Darejan Gardavadze is Professor at the Department of Arabic Studies of the TSU Faculty of Humanities. Gardavadze was a TSU student, when she first showed a keen interest in Arabic literature during an internship in the Syrian capital of Damascus in the 1990s.
