San Diego State University Georgia Commencement

The U.S. San Diego State University awarded internationally accredited diplomas to about 250 graduates during a solemn ceremony held on June 10. 43% of graduates of Bachelor of Science degree programs in computer engineering, electrical engineering, civil engineering, construction engineering, chemistry/biochemistry and computer science graduated the university with excellence.

Rector of Tbilisi State University, George Sharvashidze, Rectors of Ilia State University and Georgian Technical University, Giga Zedania and Davit Gurgenidze, respectively, the academic delegation of San Diego State University, Rector of San Diego State University, Adela de la Torre, Georgian government officials and foreign diplomats attended the event.

“Let me congratulate the students on this excellent day. 250 students have joined the cohort representing the workforce of our country. I hope that most of them will get employment. TSU continues its work over ABET accreditation and two new programs that are unique in the Caucasus,” Rector Sharvashidze said.

Rector of San Diego State University, Adela de la Torre said that the graduates are equipped with all necessary skills and knowledge to make their contribution to Georgia’s economic development as well as to solve global problems through innovative approaches. She also stressed that 37% of graduates are women that is the result of the university’s intensive efforts to increase women’s involvement in STEM fields.

U.S. Ambassador to Georgia, Kelly Degnan said that the U.S. Embassy supports and promotes STEM education in Georgia. “This is a testament to the partnership between San Diego State University in Georgia, and the three Georgian universities that are partnering together to educate the next generation of Scientists, Engineers, and Mathematics and Technology professionals in Georgia. We have great hopes for the almost 200 students from the class of 2021 and the class of 2020. We know that they are going to carry on a tradition of excellence here in Georgia, and they are going to stimulate opportunities for other Georgian students to follow behind them in the STEM field. I’m particularly pleased that 37% of the graduates are young women who are specializing in science, technology, engineering and math—a very impressive figure, very encouraging figure for women in this important field,” Ambassador Degnan said.

Last year, the commencement ceremony was held virtually due to the coronavirus pandemic. This year, students from the class of 2021 and the class of 2020 participated in the event.

TSU is the first university in the Caucasus whose two programs - Electrical and Electronic Engineering and Computer Science – were granted ABET accreditation. Based on international accreditation, TSU graduates receive internationally recognized diplomas that are competitive in any country of the world.

Since 2015, Tbilisi State University has been implementing dual degree programs with San Diego State University.
