5th Meeting of Permanent Conference of Rectors

The 5th Meeting of the Permanent Conference of Rectors was held at Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University (TSU).

Secretary General of the European University Association (EUA), Amanda Crawford congratulated the Permanent Conference of Rectors, uniting representatives of 35 higher educational institutions accredited in Georgia, on its membership to the EUA and stressed the need to further deepen the cooperation. The Permanent Conference of Rectors of Georgia is the first from the region and Eastern Partnership countries to become EUA’s collective full member. The European University Association (EUA) represents more than 850 universities, 34 Permanent Conferences of Rectors from the EU countries, Serbia and now Georgia.

“This is very important in many respects. The Permanent Conference already has the opportunity to participate in the work of the EUA Council that will allow us to defend the positions of our country and, generally, the region in this great union of universities,” Chairman of the Permanent Conference of Rectors of Georgia, Rector of TSU George Sharvashidze said.

Rector of the Georgian Technical University Davit Gurgenidze focused on the importance of joining the EUA. “The EUA membership of the Permanent Conference of Rectors is a precondition for great success. This will allow Georgian universities to have access to doctoral and other programs in the countries united in the EUA,” Davit Gurgenidze noted.

Peter Lindholm of the World Bank presented a paper about what will change in Georgia in terms of scientific research, how to transfer technologies, how to commercialize Georgian scientific potential and how to protect the copyright of Georgian scientists on the international market.

The participants also focused on recent developments in Ukraine and spoke about the assistance provided by Georgian universities to Ukrainian partners. The participants voiced the idea of establishing a global university through which Georgian universities will offer online courses to the students stuck in Ukraine.
