TSU Obtains Prestigious Status of the European Union within the Framework of the ERASMUS + Program

For the first time in its history, Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University (TSU) has been awarded the prestigious status of the EU leading center, Jean Monnet Center of Excellence, within the framework of the ERASMUS + program, which represents the highest level of Jean Monnet activities.

The Center serves as a significant interdisciplinary hub, both within and beyond the university. The Center’s objective is to facilitate and oversee academic involvement, foster sustainable democratic processes in Georgia, and enhance the conditions necessary for the implementation of pertinent changes and policies as outlined in the Association Agreement. In light of Georgia’s status as an EU candidate country, the project is oriented towards the promotion of teaching and research activities in a range of fields in alignment with the stipulations set forth in the Association Agreement.

Eight highly qualified TSU academic staff from various faculties will be involved in the work of the Center: Academician, Professor Jaba Samushia; Professor Irine Kurdadze (project author and coordinator); Professor Malkhaz Matsaberidze; Associate Professor Maia Bitadze; Professor Mariam Gersamia; Associate Professor Eka Siradze - expert/researcher; Assistant Professor Mariam Kevlishvili; Assistant Tamar Aleksidze. Professor Irine Kurdadze, Director of the International Law Institute of the TSU Faculty of Law, will lead the Center.

The Center is focused on raising awareness among target groups (youth, academia, civil society), especially in areas where the risk of disinformation is most pervasive (e.g. equality, European integration) or there is a gap in primary information concerning pivotal project issues (e.g. migration policy, environment and climate change). The activities will address the specific needs of vulnerable groups (ethnic/religious minorities residing in Georgia, people with disabilities, young people living in mountainous regions). Additionally, the Center plans to prepare academic research papers that will enhance understanding of contemporary EU policy and the relevant Georgian context. The second phase of the project will be of particular interest to the university’s academic staff and students, as the Center will facilitate their retraining and provide scientific resources as needed.
