Cooperation with COST and Library Acquisition

Sierd Cloetingh, ex-President of European Cooperation in Science and Technology (COST) and Professor at Utrecht University, donated more than 5,000 books from his personal collection to Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University (TSU).

More than 5,000 library items in the field of geology were placed in the 9th Building of TSU, namely in the auditorium named after Professor Sierd Cloetingh, which was jointly opened by TSU Rector George Sharvashidze, Professor Sierd Cloetingh, Ronald de Bruin, Director of the COST Association, Zurab Gaiparashvili, Head of TSU Library and Davit Lortkipanidze, TSU Professor and Director of the National Museum of Georgia. As part of the visit, the guests visited the TSU Mineralogy Museum, where the TSU student presented an obsidian obtained during the expedition to Professor Sierd Cloetingh as a gift.

Zurab Gaiparashvili, Head of TSU Library, said that the field of mineralogy has a decades-long history at TSU. It was launched in 1919, under the guidance of Aleksandre Tvalchrelidze, and due to this, the university has a rich library covering this field. He, however, clarified that the new collection is special and contains foreign-language and modern literature in the field of mineralogy, which is a valuable acquisition for university students, researchers and scientists. TSU Rector George Sharvashidze and representatives of Academia Europaea Regional Hub held meetings with Professor Sierd Cloetingh and Ronald de Bruin, Director of the COST Association. The participants discussed the prospects of future collaboration between Georgian scientists and researchers and COST.

Rector Sharvashidze said that the new library collection is an important acquisition for the university, which will help students and researchers learn more about modern literature in geology. Moreover, according to him, this is a gift from the scientist who is a huge supporter of Georgia. It was just during his presidency that Georgia joined COST and the regional hub of Academia Europaea was opened in the country. “We talked about the future prospects of cooperation. The projects that researchers from Tbilisi State University will present to COST will contribute to raising the quality of research and will become the basis for new cooperation with European universities,” the TSU Rector noted.

Sierd Cloetingh, ex-President of European Cooperation in Science and Technology (COST) and Professor at Utrecht University, said that TSU is the best place for donating his books. He also focused on the opportunities of future collaboration between Georgian and European scientists. He stressed that Georgia’s membership to COST will allow Georgian scientists and students to participate in summer schools and trainings, as well as to familiarize with European scientific world better.

Ronald de Bruin, Director of the COST Association, spoke about new scientific opportunities, saying that the visit to Georgia aimed to deepen cooperation between Georgian scientific community and COST.

Georgia joined European Cooperation in Science and Technology (COST) in 2021.
