Event Dedicated to the Month of Tolerance “Diversity is Our Wealth”

The “Diversity is Our Wealth” event dedicated to the Month of Tolerance took place at Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University as part of the USAID-funded “Unity in Diversity” program.

The event was organized by the Center for Civic Integration and Interethnic Relations (CCIIR), the Azerbaijani Youth Center “Alliance” and the Union of Georgian Armenians. The event aimed to introduce Georgian students to the cultures and traditions of the two largest ethnic groups in Georgia: Azerbaijanis and Armenians. It also sought to explore the mutual influences of Georgian, Armenian, and Azerbaijani cultures, as well as how these identities have been preserved while living together in Georgia.

Nino Gvenetadze, TSU Deputy Rector; Shalva Tabatadze, Head of the Center for Civic Integration and Interethnic Relations; Rusudan Chanturia, Head of the USAID “Unity in Diversity” Program; Rena Huseynova, Head of the Azerbaijani Youth Center “Alliance”; and Mariam Arakelova, Head of the Georgian Armenian Union, addressed the guests with welcoming speeches. They spoke about the importance of the event and the issue of the integration of ethnic minorities.

They noted that such events contribute to a positive presentation of minority cultures and traditions, which ensures the formation of respectful and accepting attitudes toward differences.

TSU professors, teachers, and administrative staff; advisors to the ambassadors of Azerbaijan and Armenia; and Georgian-, Azerbaijani-, and Armenian-speaking TSU students attended the event. Also, in attendance were representatives of the Azerbaijani diaspora in Georgia; co-founders of the Azerbaijani Youth Organization; ethnic Armenian citizens living in Georgia; and representatives of the cultural and educational spheres.

The event was made possible through the financial support of the United Nations Association of Georgia and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).
