The 3rd annual International Conference on "Advancing Human Rights and Safeguarding Minority Protections: International Framework and Domestic Legislation" was officially opened at Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University (TSU). This annual conference is dedicated to the memory of the founder of the International Law School in Georgia, Academician and Professor Levan Alexidze.
Foreign and Georgian experts in international law, as well as students and academic staff from countries such as Austria, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy are participating in the conference. The event is organized by the International Law Institute of the TSU Faculty of Law.
In his opening remarks, TSU Deputy Rector Erekle Astakhishvili welcomed the participants and guests, wishing them success. He added, “It is great honor that we hold this conference in honor of Professor Levan Alexidze. Professor Alexidze, a globally recognized scholar and the founder of the Georgian School of International Law, played a pivotal role in the restoration of Georgia's sovereignty. His life and academic work were dedicated to building the foundations of international law to address conflicts within Georgia, particularly highlighting the legal aspects of Russia’s destructive military actions and the repeated occupation of Georgian territories."
Other dignitaries who welcomed participants included Tamar Zarandia, Dean of the TSU Faculty of Law, Khatuna Totladze, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Georgia and Prof. Irine Kurdadze, head of the TSU International Law Institute.
Special guests and speakers at the conference included leading foreign and Georgian scholars, researchers, legal practitioners, members of international organizations, and sitting members of the European Court of Human Rights. Notable participants include Lado Chanturia, Anja Seiber-For, Benedikt C. Hartzl, Kyriaki Topidi, Jürgen Pirker, Alessandro Bufalini, Katarzyna Zombory, K. Korkelia, D. Pataraia, E. Siradze, M.Bitadze and others.
Prof. Irine Kurdadze, head of the TSU International Law Institute, noted the importance of the event, saying, “This conference fosters productive discussions, facilitates the exchange of experiences, and generates innovative ideas. By bringing together scholars, legal experts, and practitioners, we not only learn from each other's experiences in tackling contemporary challenges in international law but also explore new approaches to address these issues. It is through collective effort that we can further the principles of justice, promote equality, and ensure long-term peace both nationally and internationally."
