The Rector of Tbilisi State University, Academician Jaba Samushia held a working meeting with the President of Goethe University Frankfurt, Enrico Schleiff. The discussion focused on the expansion of collaboration between the two universities and the advancement of the Kartvelological Center at Goethe University Frankfurt.
The meeting was attended by Professor Gerd Carling, Director of the Institute for Empirical Linguistics at Goethe University Frankfurt; Manana Tandashvili, Professor at the Department of Kartvelian Studies; Darejan Tvaltvadze, Dean of the Faculty of Humanities; as well as the heads of the foreign relations services of TSU and Frankfurt University and students.
TSU Rector Jaba Samushia said that Tbilisi State University has almost 30 years of cooperation with Frankfurt University. One of the most significant Kartvelological Centers is located at Frankfurt University, where rigorous research is conducted and a completely new direction - Digital Humanities - is being developed. The Rector expressed gratitude to the representatives of Frankfurt University for the center’s active functioning, which contributes to the advancement of Kartvelian studies in Germany. “From our perspective, this project has a strategic importance. We also want to establish a digital humanities center at TSU, which will facilitate further development of our cooperation,” said Jaba Samushia. He also indicated that collaboration with Frankfurt University is anticipated within the framework of the Erasmus + programme of the European Union, which will serve to further expand the scope of cooperation.
Enrico Schleiff, the President of Goethe University Frankfurt, said that numerous students have had the chance to pursue their studies at the Department of Kartvelian Studies at Frankfurt University and engage in research activities. He emphasized the significance of preserving cultural identity, particularly in countries with a rich cultural heritage like Georgia. He further highlighted the value of the research conducted at Frankfurt University in the Kartvelian studies field over recent years, which he described as a valuable asset for both universities.
The Department of Kartvelian Studies is housed within the Institute for Empirical Linguistics at Goethe University Frankfurt. Prospective students may pursue studies at the master's and doctoral levels. Additionally, the university houses the Rustaveli Cab
