During the event dedicated to the 90th anniversary of the establishment of the Vakhushti Bagrationi Institute of Geography, the Rector of Tbilisi State University, Academician Jaba Samushia awarded the Vakhushti Bagration Medal to the Institute’s successful scientists, young researchers and teachers.
The jubilee scientific conference “Geography - Past, Present, Future Challenges” was held at the Georgian National Academy of Sciences and was attended by Nana Bolashvili, Director of the Vakhushti Bagrationi Institute of Geography, Roin Metreveli, President of the Georgian National Academy of Sciences, research fellows of the Institute and invited guests.
The speakers of the event talked about the history of the establishment of the Institute, scientific and research achievements, work of the scientists of the Institute, research, discoveries and challenges facing the Institute.
The Rector of TSU, Jaba Samushia said that the Institute of Geography is engaged in important scientific activities. “For us, the Tbilisi State University, it is essential that this Institute is a part of us, as it implements interesting and important projects. Throughout its 90-year history, the Institute has played an important role in the development of geographical science; the publications and archives accumulated through its activities are unique,” Rector Jaba Samushia noted.
The purpose of the conference was to present the achievements of Georgian scientists, to share/exchange knowledge and experience between Georgian and foreign scientists, to integrate Georgian scientists into the international scientific space and to strengthen cooperation in order to set priorities for future research in the field of geography and to develop innovative directions. The reports presented at the conference will be published in a special issue of the Georgian Geographical Journal.
The following persons were awarded the Vakhushti Bagration Medal for their contribution to the development of geographical science: Zhana Zonenashvili, Academic Doctor of Geography; Kukuri Tavartkiladze, Doctor of Science in Physics and Mathematics; Megi Shengelaia, Academic Doctor of Geography; Guliza Liparteliani, Academic Doctor of Geography; Revaz Khazaradze, Doctor of Science in Geology and Mineralogy; Marine Bokeria, Academic Doctor of Geography; Vakhtang Beladze, Doctor of Geography.
