At the Council of Europe’s initiative, the European Day of Languages has been celebrated every year since 2001 on 26 September - together with the European Commission. The objective of the celebration is to honor the cultural diversity and multilingualism of Europe and to encourage the 800 million people residing in the 47 member states of the Council of Europe, of any age, to learn more languages, at school or beyond. At the same time, it serves as the foundation for the protection, advancement, instruction and research of the languages prevalent in Europe.
