A conference dedicated to Rismag Gordeziani was held at Tbilisi State University on June 9. The renowned Georgian Hellenist, founder of the TSU Institute of Classical, Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies, TSU Emeritus Professor, Academician of the Georgian Academy of Sciences, and Corresponding Member of the Saxon Academy of Sciences, celebrated his 85th birthday.
About 30 researchers participated in the conference dedicated to the scientist, which was entitled “Current Issues of Greco-Roman Philology.” The conference included the following sections: Current Issues of Classical Philology, Current Issues of Byzantine Studies, Current Issues of Neo-Greek Studies, Reception of Antiquity in World Culture, and Current Issues of Translation from Greek into Georgian.
During the opening ceremony of the conference, TSU employees and students congratulated Rismag Gordeziani on his anniversary alongside foreign colleagues. Those in attendance included Professor Levan Gigineishvili, the director of the institute; Tassos Kriekoukis and Maria Theodorou, the former and current ambassadors of Greece to Georgia, respectively; professors from the universities of Jena and Bremen; and independent researcher Andrei Rossius. TSU professors Elguja Khintibidze and Revaz Gachechiladze were also present.
Earlier, a student conference was held in honor of the scientist. The TSU Institute of Classical, Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies organized the international student conference “The Modernity of Antiquity”, which brought together 25 students from three different levels and nine countries (Brazil, Bulgaria, Japan, Italy, Colombia, Romania, Greece, Georgia, Ukraine).
