Tbilisi State University Rector, Academician Jaba Samushia participated in the presentation of the collection of letters by Kita Chkhenkeli, a Swiss-based Georgian linguist and lexicologist – “For the Sake of the Georgian Language.”
“The letters collected in this book tell us about Georgia at that time, emigration, and cultural dialogue. This publication allows us to better understand Kita Chkhenkeli’s work and his contributions to the development of Kartvelology,” noted the Rector.
The TSU Library prepared the collection based on Chkhenkeli family’s personal archive, which was transferred to the university in 2018. The archive preserves the documentary heritage of Akaki Chkhenkeli, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Democratic Republic of Georgia, and his brother, Kita Chkhenkeli.
Kita Chkhenkeli was among the young people who traveled to Europe to receive an education during the Democratic Republic of Georgia. In 1936, he defended his doctoral dissertation at the University of Hamburg, later publishing a Georgian language textbook and dictionary at the University of Zurich in Switzerland.
