TSU 103

Georgian Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia and Minister of Education, Science, Culture, and Sport Mikheil Chkhenkeli visited Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University (TSU) on the occasion of its 103rd anniversary on February 8.

Rector of TSU, George Sharvashidze acquainted Giorgi Gakharia and Mikheil Chkhenkeli with the ongoing rehabilitation works at Building 2 of TSU. “The final stage of rehabilitation works is underway at Building 2 of Tbilisi State University. A large part of the works has already been conducted. One of its wings has been renovated. Auditoriums are ready to receive students,” Rector Sharvashidze said. He stressed that Building 2 is twice larger than Building 1. Accordingly, much more work is still to be done. Intensive works are underway in the second wing of the building: heating system and roofs have been changed completely; the building has been reinforced. After the rehabilitation works are over, Building 2 of TSU will meet all international standards.

PM Gakharia and Education Minister Chkhenkeli also visited a large physics auditorium. Rector Sharvashidze told them that so called ‘smart boards’ used for both distance and on-campus learning had been placed in all educational buildings of TSU. To support the process of distance learning, the Cartu Foundation donated 10 smart boards to TSU.

“I am glad that the University will soon have a building that will meet all modern standards, because the history and modernity of TSU really deserves it. I would like to congratulate everybody, especially students, academics, employees and the entire society on the TSU anniversary and wish them huge success,” Mikheil Chkhenkeli said.

PM Gakharia and Minister Chkhenkeli laid wreaths at the graves of TSU founders, Ivane Javakhishvili and Petre Melikishvili. The Prime Minister wished happy 103rd anniversary of TSU to its students, faculties, and alumni, and pointed out that Tbilisi Ivane Javakhishvili State University is “a vital center of the country's science, culture, and intellectual life.”

The rehabilitation works started at TSU Building 2 in 2018 and were carried out in several stages. At the initial stage, the building was reinforced, the roof and windows were replaced, and the façade, wet areas, and central heating system were renovated. At the second stage of rehabilitation work, fire and cooling/ventilation systems, and elevators will be installed, with a total area of 25,000 m2 to be renovated.

Renovation work, with GEL 27 mln financing from the Ministry of Education, Science, and Sport, will be finalized this year.

TSU Building 2 was built in 1940. It was designed by architect Mikheil Shavishvili in line with the architecture and style of TSU Building 1.

Presently, Tbilisi State University incorporates 27 buildings used for academic and research purposes.

Rehabilitation of all educational buildings of TSU will continue through 2023.
