New Ropeway - Eco-Friendly Transport for Students

At the initiative of Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University (TSU), the ropeway connecting TSU with Bagebi will serve all students free of charge. The ropeway connects TSU 10th and 11th Buildings, as well as the library with Bagebi. Its length is 320 meters, and each wagon has a capacity to carry 40 people. Travel time does not exceed four minutes.

TSU Rector George Sharvashidze, Head of Tbilisi City Hall Transport and Urban Development Agency, Victor Tsilosani, TSU Chancellor Lasha Saghinadze and students were the first passengers of the ropeway.

“It is very good that the ropeway has been restored. Once the learning process is fully resumed, the demand for ropeway will further increase. TSU students will be able to enjoy this service for free. In addition, the ropeway is part of the development of TSU Green Concept. This type of transport is environmentally friendly and thus, we care about nature. Many thanks to the City Hall, the Transport Agency and all those people who contributed to the implementation of this initiative,” Rector Sharvashidze said.

Victor Tsilosani, Head of the Transport and Urban Development Agency of the Tbilisi City Hall, said that the ropeway opened in partnership with TSU is part of the unified transport policy of the Tbilisi City Hall. “The Bagebi-Maglivi ropeway will serve the students free of charge. The purpose of our policy is to involve as many people as possible in public transportation,” he noted.

According to TSU Chancellor Lasha Saghinadze, along with the TSU students, students from other universities will also travel for free via the ropeway connecting TSU with Bagebi. “The ropeway connecting University Street and Bagebi was opened with the support of TSU. TSU handed over a land plot to the Tbilisi City Hall, after which it became possible to put the ropeway in operation. We requested free transportation for all students and the City Hall took our request into consideration,” Lasha Saghinadze said.

TSU student Kristina Kurtsikidze has already traveled by ropeway. “The ropeway is very convenient for us, the students. I personally will definitely use this means of transportation because I often have to move from Bagebi to the 11th Building of TSU. This is really good news for students,” she said.

The new ropeway will be available every day, from 08:00 to 20:00. The ropeway will ensure one-way transportation of 600 passengers per hour.
