On June 19, Ambassador of Japan to Georgia, Ishizuka Hideki, presented Professor Nana Gelashvili with the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon, as part of the 2026 Spring Conferment of Decorations on Foreign Nationals.
As the Head of the Department of Far Eastern Studies at Tbilisi State University’s Faculty of Humanities, Professor Gelashvili has contributed greatly to teaching the Japanese language and developing Japanese culture for many years. She has also made significant contributions to empirical research on the history of Asia. One of her most notable achievements was establishing the first undergraduate program in Japanese Studies at the university in 2023. For these achievements, she was awarded the Japanese Foreign Minister’s Commendation in August 2025.
The ambassador congratulated Professor Gelashvili on her contributions to the development of Japanese studies in Georgia and to the deepening of mutual understanding between the two countries. After receiving the certificate and order, Professor Gelashvili gave a thank-you speech.
